Winkler Waterproofing Solution Resin System, Swimming Pool Siracusa, Sicilia
The restoration of the Bari ramp delivered:
- A fully functional, safe, anti-slip surface
- Attractive and uniform finish with durable pigmentation
- Significant reduction in downtime
- Improved durability compared to traditional, invasive restoration systems
- A long-lasting protective layer ideal for harsh outdoor and mechanical conditions
This case demonstrates how liquid-applied systems like ONE® FLOORING offer decisive advantages in speed, sustainability, and performance.

Project Objectives
The client required the complete renovation of the existing in-ground pool, with objectives including:
- restoration of the deteriorated cement substrate
- total waterproofing of walls and floor
- chemical- resistant finish for permanent immersion
- high aesthetic value
- environmentally responsible, safe products
Traditional cement-based technologies could not guarantee the required elasticity and continuity. A high-performance resin system was therefore the optimal choice.
Why Choose a Resin System for Swimming Pools
In-ground pools are critical structures due to:
- constant immersion
- hydrostatic pressure
- structural movement
- thermal shock
- chlorine and chemical exposure
A combined epoxy-cement and polyurethane resin system provides:
- excellent adhesion to concrete
- seamless waterproof membrane
- superior elasticity and crack-bridging capability
- durable protective and decorative finish in a single cycle
Winkler Application System
The system used includes the following technical layers:
WINFIX WET – Two-component epoxy-cement skim coat
For levelling and adhesion on damp cementitious surfaces.
Functions:
- ideal base for subsequent resin applications
- substrate restoration
- high adhesion
- curing on damp substrates
WINFIX UNIVERSAL – Water-based epoxy primer
Designed to maximize the adhesion of the entire system
Advantages:
- strong bonding
- uniform absorption
- long-term system stability
- completely water-based and solvent-free
WINPAINT P – Water-based polyurethane colored finish
Final protective layer for swimming pools, tanks, and fountains.
Benefits:
- suitable for contact with non-potable water
- continuous waterproofing
- excellent chemical and abrasion resistance
- UV and color stability
- Uniform, smooth appearance
On-Site Application Phases
The renovation followed a strict certified protocol:
- Removal of all loose, damaged, or incompatible layers down to sound concrete
- Hydro-sandblasting of natural stone (calcarenite) perimeter edges
- Application of two coats of WINFIX WET (500 g/m² per coat)
- Application of one coat of WINFIX UNIVERSAL
- Application of two cross coats of WINPAINT P (RAL 1015 color)
- Application of a saturation protective treatment on surrounding stone surfaces
The result is a continuously waterproof, seamless, and reinforced pool basin.
Project Context and Contractors
The intervention was completed in Eastern Sicily by F.lli Lizzio, a specialist applicator company. Set in the province of Siracusa, the pool represents an excellent example of technical and aesthetic enhancement for outdoor wellness areas exposed to challenging Mediterranean climate conditions.
Benefits of the #WINKLERSAFE System
All products belong to the WinklerSafe line, which guarantees:
- water-based formulations
- solvent-free technology
- very low VOC emissions
- safer worksite conditions
- reduced environmental impact
A responsible choice aligned with modern standards of sustainable construction.
Results Achieved
With the Winkler resin system, the renovated pool now offers:
- complete and effective waterproofing
- extended durability
- protection against infiltration and degradation
- uniform, elegant aesthetic finish (RAL 1015)
- minimized future maintenance
This project demonstrates how water-based Winkler resin systems can combine technical performance, safety, and sustainability in a single solution.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose resin systems instead of cement-based products?
Resins provide a seamless, elastic membrane that resists immersion and structural movements better than rigid cement systems.
Can the system be applied to damp substrates?
Yes. WINFIX WET is designed to cure even on damp cementitious surfaces.
Is the final finish suitable for pool water?
Yes. WINPAINT P is specific for pools, tanks, and structures containing non-potable water.
Are Winkler products safe for applicators?
Yes. They are water-based and solvent-free, meeting the #WINKLERSAFE criteria.
Can this system be used for fountains or decorative basins?
Absolutely. It is ideal for any structure intended to hold water continuously.
