Waterproofing uneven roofing: the WINGUM PLUS H2O solution
An exemplary application of WINGUM PLUS H2O, Winkler’s innovative liquid membrane here called upon to perform a challenging task: to intervene on a new roof characterized by an irregular and richly detailed geometry.
One of the most recurring problems in waterproofing works, often a source of damage and disputes, is the protection of roofs with irregular geometry, in which the ordinary difficulties of any intervention of this nature are compounded by those dictated by their architectural layout and, not infrequently, by the presence of details that are not easy to resolve. And it is precisely in order to solve even this type of situation effectively, and at the same time quickly and economically, that WINKLER has formulated WINGUM PLUS H2O, a fiber-reinforced water-based colored elastomeric liquid waterproofing, recently used towaterproof the new roof of a building in Gorlago, in the province of Bergamo.
The Gorlago case study: challenges and successes
The problem posed to the designer – Arch. Silvano Pagani – and the contractor – the company Costruzioni Ubbiali Geom. Agostino of Cologno al Serio (BG) – was to ensure the watertightness of an unconventional surface conformation. “In addition to the natural difficulties of a waterproofing intervention,” says Arch. Silvano Pagani, “I had to think about how to create the appropriate water protection layer, having opted in terms of design for a roof with an irregular course; a situation therefore in itself more complex to approach than an ordinary flat roof. The need, in short, was to identify a solution that, having discarded the unsuitable classic bitumen-polymer membranes, would on the one hand provide the necessary guarantees of water tightness and on the other hand allow an easier treatment of the curved surface and the numerous construction details present. After a series of evaluations of the possible options, made in consultation with the contractor, the choice fell on Winkler’s Wingum Plus H2O fiber-reinforced elastomeric liquid membrane, which, due to its resistance to water stagnation, UV rays, and above all to possible movements of the substrate, provided all the necessary guarantees in an intervention of this type.”
WINGUM PLUS H2O: features and advantages
Durable, walkable and also suitable for installation on large surfaces subject to tension and movement, WINKLER’s WINGUM PLUS H2O is an innovative colored elastomeric liquid waterproofing product with a fiber-reinforced water base and high strength and durability performance, created in the WINKLERSAFE researchbed for the development of products and solutions with low environmental impact. The product combines respect for the environment with important advantages that make it one of the leading solutions forwaterproofing in construction, such as resistance to the formation of water stagnation, weathering and UV rays, high and low temperatures, abrasion and the harshest conditions of use.
Complying with the guidelines of the European ETAG 005 standard , WINGUM PLUS H2O is suitable forwaterproofing roofs, canopies, balconies and terraces on surfaces with fiber cement sheets, wood or OSB panels , concrete, ceramics, natural stones, metal including oxidizable metal , bricks or bituminous coverings, for restoration or UV protection. In the case of substrates subject to special stresses or on the very large surfaces, the product can be used in combination with the special reinforcing fabric WINTECHNO MAT, which allows the homogenization of even irregular surfaces and an even higher resistance.
Ease of laying and treatment of details
Among the advantageous features of WINGUM PLUS H2O is also counted the ease of application, which can be done by brush, paintbrush, roller, brush, spatula or airless pump: ready to use without the need to add water or other solvents, it should be applied with temperatures between +5 and +40 °C on dry and thoroughly clean support, free of dust, friable parts, foreign substances or non-stick, taking care to check for the possible presence of moisture to avoid the formation of flaking or bubbles related to vapor tensions. Once WINGUM PLUS H2O has been laid, BC SEAL BAND, a self-adhesive butyl tape self-protected with polypropylene nonwoven, and WINJOINT BAND, a highly elastic sealing tape, respectively, can be used for any sealing at corners or expansion joints.
Inwaterproofing the new roof particular care was required in treating the most vulnerable construction details such as vertical lapels, ridge and eave lines, and emerging bodies such as chimneys and skylights, which are often a source of execution errors in the application of traditional prefabricated membranes. On the contrary, the liquid consistency of WINGUM PLUS H2O and its excellent workability over a wide range of temperatures greatly facilitated the operators’ task even in the execution of these details. The result is a perfectly sealed monolithic pavement, which is also characterized by considerable resistance to foot traffic and wear thanks to the reinforcing fibers dispersed in the product’s elastomeric matrix. “In addition to offering all the necessary performance and durability guarantees,” concludes Arch. Silvano Pagani, “the Winkler product made it possible to perfectly achieve thewaterproofing of the roof in a very short time and at a lower cost than more traditional methods such as prefabricated membranes.

FAQ
Why is it difficult to waterproof a roof with irregular geometry?
Because traditional prefabricated membranes struggle to adapt to curved surfaces and complex construction details (chimneys, skylights, lapels). These points become critical and are often the source of errors and future water infiltration.
What is the best solution for waterproofing curved or uneven roofs?
The ideal solution is an elastomeric liquid membrane, such as WINGUM PLUS H2O. Its consistency allows for easy and homogeneous application that fits perfectly to any shape, ensuring a monolithic, continuous and seamless protective coat.
What are the advantages of a liquid membrane on a complex construction site?
It enables more effective treatment of vulnerable construction details. In addition, its ease and speed of application (roller, brush, or airless) allows for reduced site time and cost compared to traditional waterproofing methods.
